1831 Landholders and free inhabitants of Illawarra

An address was published in The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser on 1 February 1831 by the landholders and free inhabitants of the Illawarra to George Sleeman, resident magistrate of Illawarra. Lieutenant George Sleeman was removed from his post as magistrate in the Illawarra to become police magistrate at Campbelltown. The landholders and free inhabitants wished to express their sense of loss at Mr Sleeman’s removal and thank him for his prompt assistance received under his directons from the soldiers and mounted police under his command. They further wish Mr Sleeman health and happiness.

It eventuated that Sleeman’s stint at Campbelltown was short lived as on the 20 April 1831 the Colonial Secretary, Alexander McLeay, announced that Lieutenant George Sleeman was to return to the Illawarra as magistrate. He remained in that position until September 1832.

The full article is here.  A note at the end of the list of names states that the named persons comprise the sum total of the district not including soldiers, mounted police and constables. Names are listed in the order that they appeared reading down by column. Spelling is as it appears in the document, there are some obvious errors. An alphabetical list with brief notes follows.

The 1828 and 1841 censuses provide information on the inhabitants of the Illawarra but other sources, such as this and other published lists, help to fill in the gaps between official records.
