Wollongong Temperance Hall Company

This list of the shareholders of the Wollongong Temperance Hall Company is taken from the Deed of Settlement of 1 July 1875 Book 153 No. 25. The lengthy document contains the names of the shareholders, directors and trustees and describes in detail previous meetings, appointments, land purchase and the rules and regulations of the company.

Some key points from the document:

The initial capital of the company to be £500 divided into one hundred shares of £5 each to be paid for in monthly instalments of 10 shillings on each share the first of such payments to be made on the first day of August 1870 and the balance by instalments at the rate of 10 shillings per share at intervals of not less than one month.

On or about the 29 August 1870 a meeting was held at Wollongong appointing the directors George Hewlett, Joseph Hart, William Hewlett, William Ahern, John Payne, Daniel Griffin, Samuel Stumbles, John Brown and John Wilmott.

At a meeting on the 12 September 1870 the trustees William Hewlett, Daniel Griffin, John Payne, William Ahern, Aquila Parsons, Samuel Stumbles, John Williams and Thomas Robson were appointed.

By an indenture dated 31 December 1870 made between Robert Haworth of Wollongong and the trustees appointed a piece or parcel of land or graound allotment number two section 10 situate in the town of Wollongong commencing at the north west corner of number one allotment section 10 and bounded on the east by a line bearing south five chains. On the south by a line bearing west one chain. On the west by a line bearing north five chains to Crown Street and on the north by one chain of that street bearing wast to the north west corner of number one allotment as aforesaid being the allotment sold as lot nine in pursuance of advertisement of the fifth of May 1835. The premises to be called the Wollongong Temperance Hall

The object and business of the said company is and shall be to maintain the building now erected on the land hereinbefore described called the Temperance Hall Wollongong, to keep such building in repair and let the same on hire and in all legal ways to obtain money for the use of the said building for the benefit of the shareholders.

Other information:

The hall was in lower Crown Street on the south side, adjacent to the site of the Royal Hotel (later replaced by the Oxford Hotel).
