Agnes and Matilda Proctor

Sisters of Alexander Proctor 1865-1951. Both were born in Scotland before their family went to Uruguay about 1864. Neither sister married. The sisters travelled to Uruguay with their parents, Alexander and Catherine (nee Durie) Proctor. Two boys were born in Uruguay, Alexander in 1865 and William in 1867. William died as a baby and his mother Catherine also died in Uruguay. In 1869 Alexander Proctor married Mary Ann Ward in Uruguay. About 1872 Alexander, Mary Ann and three children returned to Scotland.

Agnes and Matilda travelled to Australia separately and before their brother Alexander. After spending time working in service the sisters bought a farm at Eastern Creek known as ‘Glendoon’.

Matilda was born on 17 December at Fourdoun, Kincardineshire, Scotland. In 1881 she was 19 years old and working as domestic servant in New Spynie, Morayshire, Scotland. She gave her place of birth as ‘America’ which is quite understandable as she had spent most of her first ten years in Uruguay.

The sampler in the photo below was made Catherine Durie and probably travelled with the family to Uruguay, back to Scotland and then to Australia.

Alexander Proctor

After following his sisters to Australia and a few years working Alexander Proctor married Margaret Scott. Margaret was a nurse working at Callan Park and they probably met there.
